When will trash and recycling be picked up in Kansas City for Christmas & New Year’s?
With the holidays approaching, there’s one question on everyone’s mind in Kansas City: When is the trash going to be picked up?
We have the answers. Kansas City observes both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day as trash holidays. That means the city doesn’t collect trash on those days, and pickup is pushed back by one day for the rest of the week.
Here’s what the week of Christmas will look like for trash and recycling pickup within Kansas City limits:
Monday, Dec. 23: Trash and recycling collected as normal
Tuesday, Dec. 24: Trash and recycling collected as normal
Wednesday, Dec. 25 (Christmas Day): No trash or recycling pickup
Thursday, Dec. 26: Wednesday trash and recycling pickup
Friday, Dec. 27: Thursday trash and recycling pickup
Saturday, Dec. 28: Friday trash and recycling pickup
Then the following week, it happens all over again. Wednesday, Jan. 1, is a trash holiday, with pickup moved back by one day for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Keep in mind that this schedule is only in effect for Kansas City’s municipal trash and recycling collection programs. If you or your landlord contract with a private trash pickup company, like WM or GFL, their schedules may be different.
Other services like curbside compost or glass collection that aren’t administered by the city may follow their own schedules. Contact your provider in advance to be sure when to set your waste out on the curb.
Can you throw away Christmas trees in KC?
This holiday season, Kansas City residents can drop off their real Christmas trees for free disposal on Saturday, Jan. 4, and Jan. 11. Here are the three Saturday dropoff locations for Kansas City residents.
Northland: 11660 N. Main St.
Central Kansas City: 1815 N. Chouteau Trafficway
South Kansas City: 10301 Raytown Road
The Northland and Central Kansas City dropoff sites are also open Monday through Friday for Christmas tree dropoff at a cost of $5 per tree. Be sure all ornaments and decorations are removed before dropping off your tree.
These dropoff sites are for real Christmas trees only — artificial trees should be disposed of through your local bulky trash pickup service.
