A 16-year-old Spring Hill boy has been charged with murder in the death of a 15-year-old Olathe boy, who was found dead in rural Miami County Dec. 4.

The teen, who has not been named, was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder. He had previously been charged with attempting to conceal, alter or destroy evidence in a felony case.

Officers with the Miami County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in the 22800 block of Lewis Drive in Spring Hill around 3 a.m. after someone inside called an ambulance. The Olathe teen, who has also not been named, was found inside with a gunshot wound.

A Johnson County paramedic team arrived at the home about 18 minutes later and pronounced the teen dead. The Spring Hill teen was transported to a local hospital as a precaution, where police took him into custody.

Johnson and Miami County deputies began to investigate the shooting as a suspicious death on Dec. 5 before updating proceedings to a potential homicide, according to the Miami County Sheriff’s Office. Between the two sets of charges against the Spring Hill teen, a search warrant was carried out at the home on Lewis Drive where the shooting took place.

Both the suspect and the deceased were students in the Spring Hill School District.

The Spring Hill School District declined to comment on the shooting.
