The 16-year-old suspect in the death of a 15-year-old Olathe teen early Wednesday morning has been remanded to a juvenile detention center in Miami County, the Miami County Sheriff’s Office shared on Thursday afternoon.

Miami County sheriff’s deputies responded to the 22800 block of Lewis Drive around 3:00 a.m. Wednesday after someone inside the home called an ambulance, according to Undersheriff Matthew Kelly.

Since no paramedics are dispatched directly throughout Miami County, a Johnson County medical response team arrived at the home about 18 minutes later, according to Kelly. The Olathe teen, a boy, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 16-year-old boy, a Spring Hill resident, was sent to a nearby hospital as a precaution, though he was not injured, according to Kelly.

Both the suspect and the victim were students within the Spring Hill School District, Kelly shared on Thursday. Neither has been publicly identified, and the district has not commented on the alleged killing.

Between Wednesday and Thursday, the Miami County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the home on Lewis Drive as the incident escalated into a suspicious death investigation, according to Kelly.

The crime scene unit of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office had also become a part of the investigation by Thursday.

No charges have been filed in conjunction with the alleged killing as of Thursday night.
