A pedestrian crossing a road in south Kansas City was hit and killed in a crash late Tuesday night, police said.

Officers responded just before 11 p.m. to East 63rd Street and Swope Parkway to a reported crash with a pedestrian.

A preliminary investigation shows that the pedestrian was crossing East 63rd Street from north to the south, when a white Chevrolet Tahoe traveling west on 63rd Street struck them, a crash report said.

The collision happened just south of the southeast branch of the Kansas City Public Library.

Paramedics responded and pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.

The driver of the Chevrolet stopped immediately after the crash and remained at the scene, the report said. They are cooperating with the investigation.

Police have not yet publicly identified the victim.

The collision is Kansas City’s 89th fatal crash of 2024, according to Phil DiMartino, a spokesman with Kansas City Police Department. At this time last year, the city had recorded 98 traffic fatalities.
