An Archie, Missouri, teen who died after his car flipped in southern Cass County Saturday night has been identified by relatives and the Archie R-V School District as Miles Humbird, 18.

Humbird was a senior at Archie High School and played on the varsity football team, which won its second straight state 8-man championship at Spratt Stadium in St. Joseph hours before the crash.

Two other Archie High School students survived the wreck. While not publicly named, the two other survivors were also on the football team and also played in the championship game, according to the organizer of a fundraiser supporting all three crash victims.

The fatal crash occurred just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday on Missouri Route B, about five miles outside Archie. Humbird, the 17-year-old driver and another passenger were traveling eastbound in a 2015 Kia K900 when the car crossed the center line and flipped.

Humbird and the driver were both ejected from the car. Humbird was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

The driver was airlifted to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, where they remain in serious condition. The other passenger traveled by private vehicle to a Belton hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released Sunday.

“[Miles] is leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, smiles and memories that will last forever,” his sister Lani Humbird wrote on social media Monday.

Earlier Saturday evening, Humbird and the rest of the Archie Whirlwinds trounced the North Shelby High School Raiders in a 48-20 postseason win, finalizing their season record at an undefeated 14-0.

In a message to students and families Monday, the Archie R-V school district described Humbird as a caring teen with a “vibrant spirit and kind heart.”

“His tragic loss has deeply affected our entire community,” district administrators wrote.

A candlelight vigil in Humbird’s honor has been planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday in front of the Archie Sports Complex, at State Route A and Butcher Road in Archie.

In addition, a celebration of life planned by Humbird’s family will take place Saturday, December 14 at 2 p.m. outside Archie High School.

A GoFundMe supporting the families of all three teens involved in the fatal wreck has raised just over $14,000 as of Tuesday morning.
