An autopsy of infamous ex-Kansas City, Kansas, police detective Roger Golubski, who died on the day his first criminal trial was set to begin Monday, recorded a single gunshot wound in his head, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Golubski, 71, suffered a single gunshot wound to his temple, the state agency said in a statement Thursday afternoon. A final autopsy report, which may take up to 12 weeks, would include further investigation and a toxicology report.

“Currently, special agents have not found evidence of foul play,” the state agency said in its statement, noting the death investigation remained ongoing.

The medical examiner did not rule on a cause or manner of death after the autopsy on Tuesday and said that information would be in the final report. The KBI said Thursday that no further information would be immediately released.

A 911 report of a gunshot brought police officers to Golubski’s residence in Edwardsville shortly after 9 a.m. Monday. The former homicide detective has lived there on house arrest for more than two years.

The suspected suicide came as Golubski faced six felony criminal charges related to alleged civil rights abuses of two women. Prosecutors alleged Golubski raped the women, including one as young as 13 years old, more than 20 years ago while acting in his capacity as a police officer.

The former detective spent more than 35 years as a sworn officer with Kansas City, Kansas, police. He left the force in 2010, spent six years on Edwardsville’s police department and retired in 2016.

Longstanding allegations

For years, Golubski has been at the center of a series of heinous accusations brought to light through civil litigation and, most recently, two federal indictments that followed an FBI investigation.

In addition to raping women, Golubski also faced a second federal case alongside three co-defendants, including drug kingpin Cecil Brooks. As a cop, prosecutors alleged Golubski used his badge to shield himself and associates from the criminal investigation of a sex-trafficking ring at an apartment complex near 26th Street and Delavan Avenue.

The sudden death Monday prevented women who long accused Golubski of sexual violence from taking the stand and telling their story in court. It also sparked questions about how the former detective would come to possess a firearm despite a court order and supervision that banned him from having one.

The KBI said earlier this week the means by which Golubski obtained a firearm while on house arrest would be within the scope of its investigation.
