Remember the KFC? Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce not big fans of Thanksgiving turkey
Even though most Americans, some 61%, plan to eat turkey for Thanksgiving, obviously not everyone is a fan. You can put Kansas City Chiefs teammates Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in the take-it-or-leave-it group.
At a news conference this week, a reporter asked Mahomes to play the “start, bench, cut” game with Thanksgiving foods — turkey, macaroni and cheese, and yams.
What would he jettison, what would he eat?
Mahomes punted the meat.
“I’m cuttin’ turkey,” he said. “I’ll probably start macaroni and cheese, if it’s made the right way, and then bench yams. But I love those, too.”
(He diplomatically refused to answer the follow-up question: What’s the right way to make mac and cheese? “I don’t wanna to get too much into it, but the right way, everybody knows what I’m saying,” said the man who has clearly had some bad cheesy mac in his lifetime.)
Reporters also asked defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo if he was telling his players not to eat a lot of food on Thanksgiving Day, given they play the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday. The Black Friday game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium begins at 2 p.m.
“I stay away from that ... if I said that to these big guys, are you kiddin’ me?” Spagnuolo said.
Around this time last year, Travis’ brother, Jason Kelce, revealed that when he and his brother were growing up, the Kelces often had pork chops instead of turkey on Thanksgiving. They’re not big fans of Tom Turkey.
So was it really a surprise to find out that Travis spent last Thanksgiving in Kansas City with friends — and KFC chicken?
His buddy, Aric Jones, shared a Thanksgiving Day photo of several KFC boxes on a stove.
KFC itself later confirmed the “TK Thanksgiving order”: 56 Pieces of KFC fried chicken, 80 hot and spicy wings, three catering-sized containers of mashed potatoes and gravy, two orders of mac and cheese, and two orders of corn.
The one thing his holiday didn’t include was then-new girlfriend Taylor Swift. It’s unclear what their holiday plans are for this year.
Swift is on a break this week from her Eras Tour before wrapping it up with three shows in Vancouver December 6-8.
Swift, who was just named the second-greatest pop star of the 21st century by Billboard, then turns 35 on Dec. 13.
Kelce’s mom, Donna Kelce, suggested Taylor and Travis might not spend this Thanksgiving together, either.
“I am going to be at a football game,” Mama Kelce said on the Today show earlier this month when asked about her own holiday plans. “Travis is playing the day after Thanksgiving. You know, football is always the holidays.
“I think we’re just going to be at the football game. We’re doing that.”
Asked whether Swift would be with the Kelce family, she said, “I don’t think so. She’s kinda busy right now. She still has her tour to do.”
