Man crossing Kansas City highway in a wheelchair hit and killed by car, police say
Update: Police identified the victim as 50-year-old Danny L. Maynard.
One man was killed as he was attempting to cross a highway with a wheelchair in Kansas City Wednesday night, police said.
Officers responded to a crash on southbound U.S. 49 Highway just before the Red Bridge exit around 10:30 p.m. For unknown reasons, a man in a wheelchair was crossing the highway from the east to the west, according to a Kansas City Police Department crash report.
A silver Chevrolet Cruze traveling south on the highway merged toward the right shoulder to yield to a fire truck that was running with emergency lights and a siren, the crash report said. The driver of the Chevy did not see the man in the wheelchair and struck him with the front of his vehicle.
The man in the wheelchair was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The driver of the Cruz was uninjured in the crash, police said.
The crash is Kansas City’s 84th traffic fatality of 2024, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a spokesperson with KCPD.
