One person killed in hit-and-run crash at 71 Highway stoplight in Kansas City
One person was killed and two people fled the scene on foot after a crash on 71 Highway in Kansas City Tuesday night, police said.
Officers responded just before 9:30 p.m. to southbound 71 Highway and 59th Street to reports of a fatal hit-and-run. Preliminary investigation shows that a silver Chevrolet Cruz was speeding south on 71 Highway when it hit the back of a gray Chrysler 200 that was stopped at a red light, a crash report states.
The driver of the Chrysler was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The front-seat passenger of the Chevrolet was transported to a hospital with critical injuries.
The driver and rear seat passenger of the Chevrolet fled from the crash scene on foot.
Police have not yet publicly identified the victim. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a spokesperson with the Kansas City Police Department, said the crash is the city’s 83rd traffic fatality of 2024. At this time last year, Kansas City had recorded 89 traffic deaths.
