Teen fatally shot, another person injured inside Kansas City convenience store: Police
The teen has been identified as 16-year-old Eli Newton.
One person is dead and another man injured following a shooting at a Kansas City convenience store Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Officers with the Kansas City Police Department responded to Indiana Market & Deli at 3646 Indiana Ave. around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on reports of a shooting, according to officer Alayna Gonzalez, a KCPD spokesperson.
Upon responding, officers discovered Newton unresponsive on the floor of the store with gunshot wounds, Gonzalez said. Emergency medical personnel declared the man deceased.
Indiana between 36th Street and 37th Street and the store and its back parking lot were blocked off with police tape Wednesday afternoon. Several neighbors watched from their porches as officers had an extended discussion to the side of the store Wednesday evening.
Officers believe the shooting happened inside the market as the result of an escalating altercation between at least two people, Gonzalez said.
“This is looking like one of those instances where somebody could have just left the store and none of this would have happened,” Gonzalez said. “...Instead, we have an individual that’s deceased inside of a store, that’s not going to see their family ever again, and their family are the ones that has to deal with that pain.”
Shortly after the shooting, another man with gunshot injuries presented at a local hospital, Gonzalez said. The man was determined to have been injured in the same shooting, Gonzalez said; however, his injuries are not life-threatening.
One suspect was detained at the scene of the shooting Wednesday afternoon, Gonzalez said. It is not immediately clear whether the suspect, deceased victim and injured victims had any prior relationships, or whether store employees were involved in the shooting.
KCPD officers have interviewed several witnesses to the shooting and are in the process of reviewing surveillance footage from inside the store, Gonzalez said.
Wednesday’s shooting was the 127th homicide reported in Kansas City in 2024, according to data collected by The Star. At this time last year, 156 homicides had been reported in the city.
