In the heart of Kansas City’s historic West Bottoms, where ghostly vibes linger among old brick buildings, Halloween comes alive with some of the nation’s most terrifying haunted houses.

From the spine-chilling Edge of Hell, the country’s oldest running haunt, to the creature-filled Beast and the cinematic horrors of Macabre Cinema, Full Moon Productions’ attractions draw thrill-seekers from across the country. With a cast of unsettling characters—like Ratman, an 8-foot-tall werewolf named Wolfie, and even Frankenstein—these haunts promise a night of fright that’s not for the faint of heart.

The West Bottoms, once a quiet, eerie area full of abandoned factories and dark streets, is now a hot spot for those seeking the ultimate haunted house experience. The area’s creepy atmosphere, combined with the legendary haunts, adds to its reputation as one of the spookiest places in the U.S. The haunted houses—The Beast, The Edge of Hell, and Macabre Cinema—were started by the family of Amber Arnett-Bequeaith 50 years ago.

At The Edge of Hell, visitors face their deepest fears, from live snakes and spiders to a crocodile. Arnett-Bequeaith, known as the Queen of Haunts, has been working in haunted houses since she was five, and her family’s tradition of terror lives on with veteran performers like Ratman and Ratbrat. These characters, who have been part of The Edge of Hell for more than 20 years, take fright to a new level, using live rats in their performances—including letting them crawl into their mouths.

The Beast offers a unique experience where visitors can choose their own path through a sprawling, five-story maze. Along the way, they may run into an the giant werewolf or catch a glimpse of Jack the Ripper lurking in the shadows, making for an intensely immersive and disorienting adventure.

For fans of classic horror, Macabre Cinema takes visitors through a haunted 1930s theater, where they encounter iconic characters like Frankenstein, his Bride, and Dr. Frankenstein. Killer clowns, mummies, and horror legends like Freddy Krueger and Pinhead round out the cast, turning this haunt into a must-see for fans of cinematic scares.
