Following Oct. 9 shooting, Kansas City shuts down unlicensed Westport business
Kansas City shut down an unlicensed Westport business Tuesday after a shooting in the immediate area injured five people last week, city officials said.
The city’s Public Safety Task force closed Westport Media Collective at 315 Westport Road, effective Tuesday afternoon, Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas announced on social media Tuesday.
Westport Media Collective did not have a valid license and had no current Fire Marshall inspection on file, Lucas wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
“Kansas City government will take all steps available to ensure resident safety,” Lucas wrote on X, “Including business closure for those endangering their customers and not compliant with our laws.
Four men and one juvenile were injured, three critically, in the Oct. 9 shooting, according to KCPD. Officers responding to the shooting around 8 p.m. found several of the gunshot victims in the street and parking lot outside of Westport Media Collective.
Multiple rounds of gunfire also damaged several cars and shattered the window at Pop! Vintage Furniture and Accessories at 312 Westport Road.
Until Tuesday, Westport Media Collective was constructed around rentable recording booths and an event space, according to social media. The small venue played host to various concerts and DJ sets, watch parties, retail and photography pop-ups and private bookings. Some events advertised alcohol for sale.
Multiple people affiliated with the Westport business district had lodged complaints about activity at Westport Media Collective in the past, according to Lucas.
