A 12-year-old boy died from injuries he sustained in a house fire early Saturday morning, the Independence Fire Department said.

Firefighters were dispatched just after 3 a.m. to a reported house fire with a person still inside the home.

Crews were met with heavy smoke at the home as they began a search for the person still inside. Firefighters eventually pulled a 12-year-old boy out of the residence and immediately began resuscitation efforts.

The boy was transported by ambulance to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. As of Saturday morning, authorities have not released the child’s identity.

The fire was quickly extinguished, IFD said in a release, and is currently under investigation by the IFD Fire Investigation Unit and the State Fire Marshal’s office.

No other information was immediately available.
