Person in custody after shooting leaves two men dead in Cass County

A second man died from injuries related to a shooting in rural Cass County on Friday afternoon, according to a spokesperson for the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched around 1 p.m. to Main and Washington streets in Freeman, near City Hall and the Freeman Community Club, after receiving reports that two men had been shot, the sheriff’s office said.

One man was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased, said Ronnie Lozano, a spokesperson for the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Another man was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

Deputies were at the scene gathering evidence Friday afternoon. One person is in custody and is being questioned, the sheriff’s office said in a release.

Lozano said that at this time the sheriff’s office could not say whether the person being questioned is a suspect. The investigation is ongoing.

Friday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said in a release that it was not looking for additional persons of interest.

The sheriff’s office has not yet provided the victims’ ages.

Freeman is a small city in rural Cass County, 52 minutes south of Kansas City.
