Amtrak passengers have started making their way back to the Kansas City area after their train derailed Monday in eastern Missouri.

The train struck a downed tree on the tracks around 4:55 p.m. near Washington, Missouri, about three and a half hours east of Kansas City, according to a statement from Amtrak. The train was traveling a daily route between Chicago and Kansas City through St. Louis.

No injuries were reported from the 124 passengers and five crew members on board. The impact caused the rear axle of the locomotive to lose contact with the tracks.

Power was restored to the train, and Amtrak said it provided complimentary food and beverages, while finding alternate travel arrangements to get passengers to their final destinations.

Amtrak worked with Union Pacific Railroad to use freight locomotives to move the train east, where customers were transferred to buses.

Passengers will be provided full refunds and other compensation, Amtrak officials said.
