1 dead, 1 seriously injured in suburban Kansas City crash involving semis on I-70: Police
A 28-year-old man was killed and another man was seriously injured in a Wednesday afternoon crash on Interstate 70 outside Blue Springs in traffic bound toward Kansas City, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Police were dispatched around 2 p.m. to a reported collision involving three vehicles — including two semitractor-trailers — in the westbound lanes of I-70 near Adams Dairy Drive. A driver and passenger in a Ford SUV were taken to the hospital with injuries, according to a crash report by the Highway Patrol.
The passenger killed Wednesday was identified as Robert T. Cox of Lenexa. A 72-year-old driver was also seriously injured.
A narrative provided in the crash report says one of the semitractor-trailers failed to stop for slowing traffic on I-70, striking the SUV from the rear and pushing the vehicle into a guardrail. That semi also rear-ended the other tractor trailer, the report says.
Police had advised commuters to seek alternative routes toward Kansas City on Wednesday afternoon as the westbound lanes of I-70 were temporarily closed to traffic. The interstate was reopened Wednesday evening.
