SUV sought in Johnson County hit-and-run that left 79-year-old woman dead: Police
The Kansas Highway Patrol was asking the public for help Wednesday to locate an SUV involved in a hit-and-run crash that left a 79-year-old woman dead.
The crash happened around 5:45 p.m. at the on-ramp from 75th Street to the northbound lanes of Interstate 35. It involved a red or maroon Chevrolet Suburban that was struck from behind and fled the scene, according to police.
The Suburban sought by police had Missouri license plate number LD4 Z864.
Photographs shared Wednesday were aimed to gather more information from witnesses about the fatal crash and locate the Suburban, according to a statement by the Highway Patrol.
The woman killed Tuesday was Sharon Bybee of Lenexa, according to the Highway Patrol’s crash report. She was a passenger in a 1969 Chevrolet Corvair, which was driven by 81-year-old Fred Bybee, who suffered minor injuries, the report says.
A narrative included in the crash report says the drivers of the Corvair and Suburban were merging onto I-35 when the Suburban slowed for traffic. The Corvair, unable to slow down, hit the rear of the Suburban before going off-road and striking a barrier wall, the report says.
The Highway Patrol was asking anyone with information concerning the whereabouts of the Suburban to contact Lt. Gustavo Ramirez at 913-782-8100.
