Need an idea for a fall escape from the hustle and bustle of the KC Metro but don’t want to spend hours traveling? Give the trail system at Weston Bend State Park a try. This weekend’s weather forecast shows sunny skies and temps in the 60s — perfect for a day exploring nature.

Oh yeah, did I mention all Missouri state parks have no fee to enter?

Of the three trails I walked with my pup Abe, I enjoyed exploring the West Ridge Trail the most. Within 10 minutes of starting out on the trail I was walking on a bluff overlooking the beautiful Missouri River valley.

Turkey vultures soared over the water and above the trees which were just starting to change colors when I hit the trail in early October.

Further along the trail, I lucked out and spotted a red-bellied woodpecker finding itself a meal in a tree.

Although that type of woodpecker is known to remain in one area throughout the year, the park plays an important role as refuge for migratory birds. More than 300 species of birds migrate through the area each spring, as the many distinct habitats offer special characteristics that attract birds.

According to a trail-side sign, hikers who also enjoy birding could see up to 140 different bird species within the park itself.

Back to the hike. The trail can become quite steep at times, and it is comprised mostly of dirt, so be wary of a slippery trail if you happen to visit after a significant rainfall. Keep an eye out for exposed tree roots, too.

Families with strollers might be better off on the Paved Bicycle Trail that runs near the banks of the Missouri River. Dogs are also allowed on the trail, just remember to bring along bags to pack out their droppings.
