Walk along the Blue River and connect to other trails on this popular Kansas City path

My pup Abe loved getting outside and sniffing to his heart’s content along the River Trail on the Blue River Parkway Trail system in Kansas City. Dogs are allowed on the trails as long as they are leashed and their owners dispose of waste properly.

In the southwestern corner of Jackson County, more than 30 miles of trails meander through dense forests and along the Blue River as part of the Blue River Parkway Trail System.

The Blue River Parkway Trail system offers residents and visitors about five miles of walking trails and 26 miles of single-track bike trails.

My pup Abe and I hit the River Trail around noon on a hot September day. The trailhead for this path is located near the Alex George Wetland at 10831 Blue River Rd.

The five-mile-long trail runs along the banks of the Blue River and into the woods surrounding the river. I was relieved to have such a great tree canopy to help keep us in the shade for the majority of our hike.

We accessed the trail near the intersection of Blue Ridge Boulevard and Blue River Road. I recommend driving about a half mile north from the intersection to the trailhead for better parking and an easier entry to the trail system.

The trail offers clearly marked routes and the river water was clear enough to spot a couple of large fish. We saw only two other people on the trail, one person was sunbathing on the banks of the river and another was biking through the dirt single-track trail. Kids would have a blast here, exploring the woods and river itself.

Tips for enjoying your walk at Blue River

Definitely take advantage of the changing colors that come with autumn and hit up the river trail to see them reflected in the Blue River. Bring your furry friend along but be ready to pack out their business with doggy bags as there are no trash bins along the trail. If you’re looking for a portion of the trail with paved walkways, check out the trailhead at Minor Park near Blue River Road and East 116th Street. See the trail map published by Jackson County Parks and Rec.

Although sometimes hard to find, most trails are marked at intersections of trails along the Blue River Parkway Trail system.
