A driver has critical injuries following a crash early Sunday in Kansas City.

Officers responded to the two-vehicle collision around 1:30 a.m. in the area of northbound Interstate 435 and 71 Highway, according to Capt. Corey Carlisle, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

A white BMW traveling the wrong way in the northbound lanes of I-435 struck a gray Toyota Corolla head on.

Emergency medical crews transported the Toyota driver to a hospital with critical injuries. The front seat passenger in the BMW was also taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The BMW driver was not injured.

Carlisle said the Toyota driver remains in serious condition, and the BMW passenger is in stable condition.

Police are looking at impairment as a possible factor in the collision.
