Two people were injured, one critically, in a wrong-way crash Monday evening on U.S. 71 in Kansas City, according to police.

Officers were dispatched to the crash site around 5:15 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway at East 39th Street, Kansas City police said in a written statement. Two vehicles — a Dodge van and a blue Chevrolet sedan — were involved.

The driver of the van told police that vehicles in front of him began taking evasive action as he was in the center lane. He then saw the blue Chevrolet going the wrong way toward him and collided with the car head-on, according to police.

The driver of the van was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Police said the other driver was taken away by ambulance with critical injuries.

The investigation remained ongoing Monday night. Police were still working to determine where the blue sedan got on the wrong side of the divided highway.
