Pedestrian hit, killed crossing Kansas City area street Friday. Police investigating

A pedestrian was killed attempting to cross a street in Independence, police say.

Around 9:30 p.m., a 2018 Volkswagen Atlas was traveling east on 23rd and Haden streets when it hit someone, according to a statement from the Independence Police Department.

A witness told officers the pedestrian was nearly struck by another vehicle that was forced to take “evasive action” before the person was struck by the Volkswagen.

The pedestrian was transported to the hospital where they later died, police say.
