Man killed in Northland Kansas City crash was U.S. Marine, avid motorcyclist
A young man killed in a motorcycle crash in Kansas City’s Northland earlier this month was a service member in the U.S. Marines Corps, loved ones said.
Gregory D. Hayes was an avid motorcyclist, fan of lake wakeboarding and valued his time with family and friends, family said in a GoFundMe post raising money ahead of his Aug. 26 funeral.
“He touched the lives of everyone he met and was always the first to help those in need,” family wrote.
Hayes was 19 when he died in the wreck.
Police were called just before 10 p.m. on Aug. 8 to the area of Northwest Barry Road and North Marston Avenue.
The driver of a black Lexus GS 300 pulled out of a private driveway, then allegedly headed east — the wrong direction — in the westbound lanes of Barry Road.
Hayes was driving a Honda CBR 600 RS westbound on Barry Road when the driver of the car hit him head-on, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car wasn’t injured.
Hayes was the 55th person killed in a crash this year in Kansas City, according to the police department.
