One person was critically injured after a police chase of suspected carjacking suspect led to a crash Tuesday afternoon in Kansas City, according to police.

Officers responded around 12:21 p.m. to the crash in the area of Southbound Interstate 435 and Bannister Road, said Capt. Corey Carlisle, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

Police were pursuing a red Toyota Corolla that was allegedly carjacked, when the Toyota traveled down an embankment and onto the southbound lanes of I-435.

A black Volvo T6 braked while changing lanes to avoid the Toyota, but the Volvo was rear-ended by a red Freightliner semi-truck and car carrier. The impact pushed the Volvo west across all lanes of traffic and into a ditch. The Freightliner also struck the Toyota.

Emergency medical crews took the Volvo driver to a hospital in critical condition. The passengers in the Volvo and the Freightliner driver were not seriously injured in the crash.

Police later reported one of the passengers in the Volvo was the victim of the carjacking, and had reportedly been in the car with the suspects before being beaten and carjacked. Police said they located the Volvo while the suspects were allegedly trying to commit another robbery in the area of E. 101st Terrace, and were pursuing the vehicle before the crash.

The carjacking victim was taken to a hospital, and is stable.

After the wreck, the suspects were allegedly taken into custody after a brief foot chase. Police said their investigation is ongoing.
