Police are investigating possible impairment after a crash Saturday night launched an SUV into a rock wall and killed one person in Kansas City.

Officers responded just after 6:30 p.m. to East 23rd Street and Kensington Avenue, according to a news release from Capt. Corey Carlisle, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

A white Dodge Grand Caravan rented through Z-Trip was turning left on northbound Kensington, when a white Hyundai Accent traveling at a high speed struck its side. The impact forced the Dodge to spin and hit a rock wall.

The rear passenger in the Dodge was partially ejected and pinned between the SUV and the rock wall, Carlisle said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver of the Dodge reported soreness and said he would transport himself to a hospital. The Hyundai driver was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries.

Officials are investigating whether or not the Hyundai driver was impaired.
