A pedestrian that ran across a Kansas City interstate died Friday night after being struck by a car about three miles southeast of downtown.

Officers responded to calls of a collision at 11:04 p.m. Friday night near Interstate 70 and East 27th Street, according to Capt. Corey Carlisle, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

A police investigation determined a Hyundai Elantra traveling east in the third lane of the interstate hit the pedestrian as they were running across the roadway.

The driver did not see the person running until the collision.

The Hyundai Elantra stopped near the east 27th street exit and the driver, who was not injured, called Kansas City police for assistance.

Police determined the driver was not impaired during the crash, Carlisle said.

The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene in what marked the 43rd car collision-related fatality of 2023. At this time in 2022 there were 46 fatalities.
