An Independence woman was awarded $600,000 in a court judgment for a lawsuit after almost losing her hand back in 2017 while using an electric meat grinder.

Terri Murphy was using an LEM Product professional grade electric meat grinder at the time of the incident. The company produces a variety of electric meat grinders, some allowing users several levels of horsepower, according to their website.

In the lawsuit, Murphy’s attorney Blake Green with BG Law said that while using the grinder, his client’s hand was caught and pulled into the machine. Her daughter was able to help by unplugging the machine.

As a result, Murphy lost two full fingers, and partially lost her ring finger and the tip of her thumb.

Murphy claimed the manufacturer was responsible because of the lack of safety labels on the product and the design of the machine, which she maintained in her lawsuit included a power switch that was not easily reachable.

The manufacturer argued negligence on Murphy’s part.
