Kansas City Police are investigating a head-on collision that happened Wednesday night on westbound Interstate 70 and The Paseo, according to Sgt. Jack Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.

Both drivers were hospitalized with critical injuries.

Police said one of the drivers was driving the wrong way on I-70 a Ford Explorer when they swerved to miss a semi-truck and trailer, said Becchina.

Instead, the Ford smashed head-first into an Infiniti. That driver also had to be hospitalized with critical injuries.

Becchina said KCPD is investigating whether the Ford driver was impaired at the time of the crash. Two passengers were also in the Ford. One was taken to local hospital with serious injuries, the second passenger in the back row exited the vehicle and ran from the accident scene on foot.

Their injuries are unknown.
