Goose waddles into Kansas City half-marathon, outruns a few humans. Watch the videos
Runners in Saturday’s Rock the Parkway half-marathon remained unflappable when a goose joined the race.
It wasn’t clear if it was chasing the humans or a medal.
Videos posted to social media show the goose run-waddling alongside runners at various points along the Ward Parkway course. (Wouldn’t you pull our your cellphone if a bird suddenly started keeping pace with you?)
It flapped its wings and honked as it ran after/alongside the runners, occasionally lifting off the ground.
Hey, was that cheating?
“Here is a much better video of our little running friend from yesterdays race. This was just (too) funny!” runner Sandra Hughes posted on Facebook.
Runner Kristen Casey also posted video showing how she flew past the bird.
“Another fun run! We rocked the parkway!! ... I assaulted a goose that was (assaulting) runners,” Casey wrote.
Those webbed feet are designed for paddling water, not running — hence the waddle.
But oddly, there is precedent for water fowl participating in human sports.
And we’re not talking about Duck, Duck, Goose.
Last year a duck named Wrinkle ran a kids 1K at the Long Island Marathon in New York, clocking “a world duck record of 18 minutes and eight seconds,” according to Running magazine.
A YouTube video of her feat has racked up nearly 2 million views since last May. “She didn’t fly, she didn’t cheat, she waddled through the whole thing just like everyone else,” the video chatter says.
One of Hughes’ Facebook friends asked of the goose: “What was it’s finishing time?”
“I think I beat him,” she replied.
