He’s got a ‘Blank Space’: KC mayor taking ideas for Taylor Swift concert tributes
At this rate, Taylor Swift will be president of the United States by the time she wraps up The Eras Tour in August.
Calm down, Swifties, calm down.
The megastar has scooped up an impressive array of civic honors along the tour. The red carpet treatment began when the first city on the tour, Glendale, Arizona, outside Phoenix, temporarily changed its name to “Swift City.”
Will Kansas City follow suit?
How do you feel about — Kansas Swifty?
On Monday, a fan asked Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas whether the city will rename itself when Swift comes to town. She will be fresh off a one-week break when she performs two shows, July 7 and 8, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
“I have ideas you can use for free:- Kansas Swifty — Taylor City (kinda lame I just cheated on this one) - TSMO,” Meghan with an H tweeted at Lucas. “This is not a comprehensive list please DM for more ideas. Gotta get the ball rolling now.”
People jokingly suggested the city set up a committee, with a budget, to study a Swift name change.
Well, maybe the mayor should listen to some Taylor Swift music first?
“I’ve heard cities are doing this,” Lucas tweeted. “Not knowing her music as well as I perhaps should (although I do know “Shake it Off” from watching the Sing movie with the kid), I welcome your ideas!”
Cities along the tour are trying to one-up one another with their pop princess pomp.
Last month Arlington, Texas, outside of Dallas, temporarily renamed a street near the AT&T Stadium where Swift performed. For a few shining moments it was known as “Taylor Swift Way” — complete with a green street sign.
Las Vegas “flexed like a Vegas acrobat” and illuminated the Gateway Arches near its downtown in colors corresponding to the various Swift “eras.”
This week in Tampa, Florida, Mayor Jane Castor announced that, because the city has “a reputation to uphold,” it is presenting Swift with keys to the city and naming her mayor for a day. The city also plans to light up buildings and bridges for the “Bad Blood” singer, who will perform three shows there Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Swift’s fans offered Lucas a few suggestions. Instead of “City of Fountains” — “City of Fearless,” the name of one of her albums.
Or rename Arrowhead Stadium “Eras-head Stadium!”
They suggested lighting up downtown buildings and the skyline in the signature colors of Swift’s “eras.”
“Yes, Mayor Q! Do it! Arrowhead Way can be renamed to Swift Way; light up Union Station/downtown/fountains in RED or rainbow (for Lover),” Swift fan Kelly Clark tweeted.
“She’s got a song called Dorothea that you can absolutely play off of using the Wizard of Oz Don’t worry, I’ll think of more!”
Whatever he ends up doing, Lucas is bound to make someone angry because not everyone is as eager as her fans to jump on this train.
“No, just no to all of that,” one of the mayor’s followers tweeted.
Another asked: “Why give her more publicity than she already receives?”
And hey … what about Beyonce, others pointed out? She brings her Renaissance tour to Kansas City in September.
Is Kansas City as crazy in love for her?
That infamous Taylor-Beyonce-Kanye mess at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will not be forgotten.
“I’mma let you finish but Beyon-sas City is the greatest city of all time. One of the best of all time!” the Northeast News tweeted.
