A driver is in critical condition Sunday after traveling the wrong direction on a Kansas City highway and hitting another vehicle, according to police.

A black Chevrolet Equinox was traveling westbound around 1:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near Stadium Drive, Kansas City police said. A white Ford Transit van was traveling eastbound and attempted to avoid the Chevrolet, but was hit in an off-set head-on collision.

Both vehicles veered off the highway and into a median on the south side of the interstate.

The Chevrolet’s driver was taken to a hospital with critical injuries and remains in critical condition.

The driver of the Ford was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening and is in stable condition.
