One person died after colliding with a semi-truck on a Kansas City interstate early Saturday morning, according to police.

Officers responded to calls of a fatal crash at 3:18 a.m. on Interstate 470 near the Blue Ridge Road exit, said Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a spokesman for the department.

Police determined that a Dodge pickup truck was traveling the wrong direction in the westbound lanes of Interstate 470.

A Volvo semi-truck driving in the same lane saw the pickup heading east and attempted to swerve around the vehicle, Becchina said.

But the two cars collided and the pickup truck burst into flames. The driver was declared dead at the scene.

The semi-truck driver was not injured.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the crash, Becchina said.

The incident marks the 78th vehicle-related death in 2022. At this time in 2021 there were 73 vehicle-related deaths, according to Kansas City police records.
