One dead, two injured following two-vehicle crash that sparked fire in Kansas City
One person died and two others were injured Sunday morning in Kansas City after a two-vehicle collision, police said.
An officer tried to stop a Cadillac that was doing doughnuts around 3 a.m. at the intersection of Truman Road and Grand Boulevard, Officer Donna Drake, a spokeswoman with the Kansas City Police Department, said in a news release.
The Cadillac fled north on Grand at a high speed, and the officer disengaged around 13th and Grand, Drake said.
Then, the Cadillac continued north until it struck the back of a stopped gray Chevy Silverado pickup, she said.
After the initial crash, the Chevy hit a traffic light pole and then struck a decorative light pole on the west side of Grand when it caught fire, Drake said.
The officer who initially tried to stop the Cadillac arrived at the scene, put out the fire and started rendering first aid, Drake said.
A passenger in the Cadillac was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, Drake said. The Chevy driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the driver of the Cadillac was transported to the hospital with critical injuries, she said.
This was the 72nd road fatality in Kansas City this year, according to data tracked by police.
