Traffic alert: More lane closures expected at Three Trails Crossing in south KC

Unexpected complications in a bridge repair project on westbound Interstate 435 in south Kansas City are forcing highway officials to make additional closures, the Missouri Department of Transportation announced.

Crews are working to make repairs to an expansion joint to the bridge that carries westbound I-435 over the Blue River, just west of the Three Trails Crossing, formerly known as the Grandview Triangle.

New closures include the reduction of westbound I-435 to one lane between Grandview Road and 104th Street and the closure of southbound I-435 at southbound U.S. 71 and Interstate 470.

Previously, the MoDOT’s Kansas City District announced that drivers through the Three Trails Crossing should expect:

  • Lanes to be reduced on westbound I-470 at Blue Ridge Boulevard.
  • The ramp from westbound I-470 to westbound I-435 to be closed, forcing traffic to go north on I-435 or south on Interstate 49.
  • The ramp from northbound I-49 to westbound I-435 to be closed.
  • The bridge repair project created a traffic problem for commuters Wednesday morning. Kansas City Scout traffic cameras showed traffic at virtual standstill about 8 a.m. as drivers headed to westbound Interstate 435 across from what was formerly known as the Grandview Triangle.

That was before crews were scheduled to close westbound Interstate 470 at I-435 to make urgent bridge joint repairs at 9 a.m. along I-435 over the Blue River. The closure was to be in place until 5 p.m.

Crews had to start earlier because of unexpected complications with the project, a MoDOT spokeswoman said.

The work is expected to cause additional traffic delays throughout the Three Trails Crossing during the closures. Drivers were urged to check KC Scout traffic cameras or WAZE for real-time traffic conditions.
