Traffic backed up on I-470 in Kansas City during morning rush hour as bridge work starts

A bridge repair project created a traffic problem for commuters Wednesday morning in the Three Trails Crossings in south Kansas City.

Kansas City Scout traffic cameras showed traffic at virtual standstill about 8 a.m. as drivers headed to westbound Interstate 435 across from what was formerly known as the Grandview Triangle.

That was before crews were scheduled to close westbound Interstate 470 at I-435 to make urgent bridge joint repairs at 9 a.m. along I-435 over the Blue River. The closure was to be in place until 5 p.m.

Drivers should expect traffic delays and find alternative during the closure, the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Kansas City District warned.

  • Lanes will begin to be reduced on westbound I-470 at Blue Ridge Boulevard.
  • The ramp from westbound I-470 to westbound I-435 will be closed, forcing traffic to go north on I-435 or south on Interstate 49.
  • The ramp from northbound I-49 to westbound I-435 will be closed.
  • The left three lanes of westbound I-435 from Grandview Road to 104th Street will be closed.

The work is expected to cause additional traffic delays throughout the Three Trails Crossings. Drivers were urged to check KC Scout traffic cameras or WAZE for real-time traffic conditions.
