Part of Interstate 435 in Kansas City was shut down Sunday as officers investigated after a person was found dead in the median, police said.

Police later determined the person, a pedestrian, was fatally wounded in a hit-and-run crash late Saturday or early Sunday on northbound Interstate 435 near Oldman Road, which is between East Gregory Boulevard and East 87th Street, Officer Donna Drake, a spokeswoman with the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email Sunday afternoon.

All lanes of the highway were temporarily shut down between Gregory Boulevard and 87th Street on Sunday morning, police said.

Police received a call at 8:47 a.m. Sunday after a motorist saw the body on southbound I-435 near Gregory Boulevard. A person was pronounced dead at the scene.

No suspect or vehicle information was immediately available Sunday afternoon, Drake said, adding “the vehicle will have heavy front end damage.”

Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to call police or the anonymous Crimestoppers TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
