Crash kills pedestrian in lane of traffic near Missouri 291 & U.S. 24 in Independence

A pedestrian died after being hit while in a lane of traffic Thursday night in Independence, a police spokesman said.

The crash occurred about 9:30 p.m. near Missouri 291 and U.S. 24 highways in the northern part of the city, said Sgt. Jason Petersen with the Independence Police Department’s accident investigation unit.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash was headed south when he struck the pedestrian, Petersen said. The pedestrian, whose identity was being withheld until family could be notified, died at the scene. The driver was uninjured and was cooperating with the investigation.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Petersen said.
