Politicians and fans alike turned to social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook Thursday to celebrate the first day of legalized sports betting in Kansas.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas used both platforms to talk about missed opportunities for Missouri.
“Congrats on sports betting, Kansas,” he said in a message on Twitter shortly after 4 a.m. “Enjoy the increased revenue that your neighbors to the east will not see. Be kind to the many Missourians coming over to play responsibly.”
Earlier this year, Missouri legislators failed to come to an agreement to allow its residents to place bets on major college and professional sports.
The mayor’s pre-dawn tweet drew a few responses, including one from Will Gregory (@wgPR) who had an offer for the mayor.
“Text me your bets, I’ll be at@Hollywood_Kan all day,” Gregory said in his reply.
David “Flash” Hopkins (@DavidLeeTacos) said his “money is on Kansas benefiting big time!”
In a reply that some will consider to be controversial, Dads Garage (@dapperstache) replied: “Next up: Stealing the Chiefs.”
When Kansas passed legalized sports betting this spring, it included the fund to attract professional sports team. That led to speculation that Kansas was making a play to lure the Kansas City Chiefs from Missouri, but that scenario appears unlikely.
Others took to Twitter to celebrate too.
Mike McGrew (@Zavagtastic) also felt that Kansas was going to be the winner: “That giant sucking sound you hear is the sound of Missourians heading over to Kansas on the first day of legal sports betting.”
Craig Little (@little_craig) wrote: “Happy sports betting is legal in Kansas day!!”
And Hunter Kirby (@hunterkirbyh05) weighed in: “Sports betting in Kansas goes live today.”
Sportsbettingdime.com expressed its excitement on TikTok
Meanwhile on Facebook, Phillip Marek had this take: “Legal sports betting starts in Kansas Thursday! I’ll be bankrupt by January.”
