‘Meals on wheels’: Another Kansas City truck devoured by Independence Avenue bridge
The Independence Avenue bridge gobbled up another victim Friday morning, when a large white semi-truck tried and failed to pass through the infamous Kansas City passage unharmed.
A social media post by Kansas City police showed the truck with its roof caved in and walls ripped out after attempting to slide under the concrete overpass.
“The Independence Avenue bridge loves meals on wheels,” authorities said at about 7:17 a.m. over Twitter.
No one was injured in the wreck, according to police.
The truck has become the latest casualty in a string of incidents where large vehicles have been squashed under the low-lying bridge.
In May it was a garbage truck; in January it was multiple large, white trucks. The structure is “undefeated”, according to the Kansas Citians watching from a safe distance.
The city is looking to install a warning curtain in front of the overpass, which would use a loud noise to alert drivers that they may not clear the bridge’s 12-foot entrance. Flashing lights and signs are currently used to warn drivers of the low clearance.
City spokesman John Baccala hoped to work with Kansas City Terminal Railway to secure funding for the curtain by the end of the year, according to a previous report.
