Child critically injured after being ejected from pickup truck in KC crash on I-435

A four-year-old child suffered life-threatening injuries after being ejected from a pickup truck during a two-vehicle collision early Friday on Interstate 435 in Kansas City, a police spokeswoman said.

The crash, which shut down the highway for nearly four hours, occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. past Winner Road on northbound I-435, said Capt. Leslie Foreman, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department.

A silver GMC Arcadia SUV and a green Ford F150 pickup truck were headed north on I-435 when the two vehicles collided in the middle and right lanes of the highway, she said.

The force of the collision caused the pickup to flip over, ejecting the the child, who was not restrained, Foreman said. The child suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. Three adults in the pickup suffered minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the GMC ran off the right side of the highway and down an embankment. The driver, who was alone in the SUV, was critically injured and taken to a hospital.

During the collision, several feet of guardrail were destroyed, and it snarled traffic during the early part of Friday’s rush hour. The highway reopened around 6:15 a.m.
