Residents jump from upper window of home to escape Kansas City, Kansas, house fire
One resident and a firefighter were injured in a house fire early Tuesday morning in Kansas City, Kansas, a fire department spokesman said.
Firefighters were dispatched just after 2 a.m. to a house fire near 53rd Street and Crest Drive, said Scott Schaunaman, a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department. Four people had jumped from an upper story window to escape the smoke and flames, Schaunaman said.
A female resident was transported from that home to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and ankle pain after jumping from the window.
One firefighter was also transported to a hospital with a minor foot injury.
Crews worked to put out the fire at the first home, but it spread to the attic of a nearby residence, Schaunaman said. Two people inside that home also escaped, Schaunaman said.
The fire at that home was contained to the attic, Schaunaman said. The home where the fire originated has extensive damage to the upper level and back, he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
