A 68-year-old pilot was killed late Monday morning after attempting to make an emergency landing with a single-engine plane in a bean field near Basehor, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

According to a report by the patrol, the plane was heading south near U.S. 24, west of 151st Street, when the pilot made a hard-right turn that caused the nose to face east. After landing, the plane burst into flames and became fully engulfed, the report said.

Earlier Monday, Leavenworth County Undersheriff Maj. Jim Sherley confirmed the small plane had crashed in a rural part of the town, roughly 23 miles from downtown Kansas City. He said the crash happened about 10 a.m. and that local fire crews had been called out to the scene, which was later turned over to federal investigators.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Monday that the agency would investigate the crash. The agency identified the aircraft as an experimental Nieuport 28 airplane.
