A young girl who was injured last week at the Oceans of Fun water park in Kansas City has died, the park owner said Tuesday.

A lifeguard responded to the young girl as she was in distress at 6:45 p.m. on July 5 in the Coconut Cove pool, according to Dwayne McMulkin, a spokesman for Cedar Fair Entertainment, which owns the venue.

The staff member pulled her out of the water and emergency medical personnel performed CPR.

Shortly after, firefighters arrived to continue caring for the girl, said Jason Spreitzer, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.

“Any time we’re responding to an incident with a child is really sad,” he said.

Crews transported her to Children’s Mercy Hospital with critical injuries.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of her passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time,” McMulkin said in a statement.

The Coconut Cove pool remains closed at this time, he said.

The girl’s name has not been made public by authorities.
