Truck hits gas equipment in Kansas City, Kansas, causing leak and evacuation of building

A gas leak forced people to evacuate a Kansas City, Kansas, building Friday after a truck collided with multiple gas meters.

Firefighters were dispatched around 11:28 a.m. to 749 Central Avenue on reports of a gas leak, said Scott Schaunaman, a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department.

When officers arrived, they found a truck collided with two gas meters in front of a balloon shop and electric motor repair business, he said.

Firefighters plugged a leak in the first meter, but were unable to plug the second leak.

Video by the department shows crews using hoses and trying to crawl under the car to stem the flow of gas.

Hazmat crews evacuated people patronizing businesses on the block and shut down power in the building.

Shortly after, a tow truck arrived at the scene to move the truck off the gas meter and personnel plugged the leak.

No injuries were reported.
