72-year-old Overland Park man was pedestrian struck, killed by out-of-control vehicle

Phillip Shannon, a 72-year-old Overland Park man, was identified as the pedestrian killed when a vehicle veered out of control following a crash and struck him, a police spokesman said.

According to preliminary reports, the crash occurred about 10:15 a.m. Sunday near East 121st Street and Quivira Road as a vehicle attempting to turn onto northbound Quivira. The driver of the vehicle collided with one that was headed south, according to the Overland Park Police Department.

The force of the collision caused the driver of the southbound vehicle to lose control and it careened off the road and struck Shannon who was walking nearby, police said. Shannon was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries where he died shortly thereafter.

One of the drivers sustained minor injuries in the crash and was also taken to a hospital.

The crash remains under investigation, said Officer John Lacy, a spokesman for the Overland Park Police Department.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the traffic safety unit at 913-890-1482.
