Vehicle in crash veers out of control, strikes and kills pedestrian in Overland Park

The victim has been identified as 72-year-old Phillip Shannon, of Overland Park, police said in an update Monday morning.

A vehicle veering out of control following a crash struck and killed a man walking nearby, Overland Park police said Sunday.

The fatal crash occurred about 10:15 a.m. Sunday near East 121st Street and Quivira Road, according to a news release prepared by Capt. Todd Chappell, a watch commander with the Overland Park Police Department.

The crash occurred as a vehicle was attempting to turn onto northbound Quivira. The driver of that vehicle collided with a vehicle headed south on Quivira, police said.

The force of the collision caused the driver of the southbound vehicle to lose control and as it careened off the road it struck the pedestrian, according to the release.

The pedestrian was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries, but he died a short time later. The name of the victim, an Overland Park man, was being withheld until family could be notified.

One of the drivers involved in the crash was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Crash investigators with Overland Park Police Department’s traffic safety unit were investigating the fatal crash. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the traffic safety unit at 913-890-1482.
