If you’re trying to get a taste of the best coffee in the United States, you may not need to look too far.

The best coffee roasters in the states of both Kansas and Missouri are right here in Kansas City. Food and Wine magazine named Monarch Coffee and PT’s Coffee two of the best coffee roasters in the country, with Monarch being named the best in Missouri and PT’s in Kansas.

Since Food and Wine’s list is specifically centered on coffee roasters, both companies roast and brew their own blends of coffee.

Both Monarch and PT’s were recommended by readers in The Star’s Kansas City Coffee Shop bracket and ultimate guide. Monarch Coffee, which has two locations on Broadway and Grand Boulevard, made it to the top eight in the bracket. It was also named the best coffee shop in Missouri by Food and Wine in another list.

The fan favorite coffee house was founded by a barista and an artist. Aside from its pride in its in-house roastery and competitive coffee, Monarch is also a space that aims to be safe for women, people of color and the LGBTQ+ community.

PT’s Coffee has two locations for Kansas Citians to try, one in the Crossroads and another in the Power and Light District. The coffee shop was founded in 1993 in Topeka, and they specialize in direct trade partnerships, a service that has put them at the top of the coffee game.

PT’s was set to open a shop in downtown Overland Park, at 8139 Metcalf Ave., but those plans are still on hold.
