A Kansas City coffee shop has made the list of the best coffee spots in America curated by Food & Wine Magazine. Monarch Coffee, which boasts two locations in the center of the city, was named the best coffee shop in the state of Missouri.

Food & Wine’s David Landsel writes that Monarch is “one of classiest environments this longtime coffee-loving city has ever seen,” praising its elegant decor and self-roasted brew.

Founded in 2017, Monarch prides itself on its European aesthetic and commitment to diversity, offering quirky biographies of every employee on its website. The company’s two locations, in Midtown and Crown Center, offer a tranquil oasis in the heart of the bustling city.

Monarch made an impression on our readers, too: Last month, we asked for your favorite coffee shops in the city. The response was overwhelming: 92 spots were recommended, with Monarch among those who received enough buzz to make it into our 32-spot bracket.

Its fans then put up a noble fight, keeping it in the running through our Delicious Eight round. After that, it seems locals disagreed with Food & Wine’s analysis: Monarch was knocked out of contention in the semifinals, leaving four other local coffee shops to vie for the title of Kansas City’s favorite.

The winner of our bracket will be announced on Friday, March 18.
