Two children were in critical condition after an overnight fire at an apartment building in Kansas City sent 15 people to the hospital.

Firefighters were called just before 12:34 a.m. to a fire at a three-story apartment building at 10409 East 42nd Street, according to Jason Spreitzer, a Kansas City Fire Department spokesman.

Arriving crews saw visible smoke and fire. Some residents were seen jumping from the second story of the building. Firefighters also saw flames blowing out of the first floor doorway.

Crews used multiple ladders to rescue several residents from balconies, Spreitzer said.

Nine children and six adults were taken to hospitals after suffering from smoke inhalation, burns or both.

The fire department’s Arson and Bomb Unit is investigating the origin and cause of the fire. The department stressed the importance of having working smoke detectors and an exit plan in place.
