Truman Presidential Library is expanding its hours and services. Here’s what to know
The Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum will expand its hours to 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. in a phased reopening process starting on Wednesday, April 6.
Phased reopening means the new hours will be introduced in phases over time.
The first phase is the library’s research room facilities, which will be open on April 4. The research rooms are now open Monday to Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., and appointments are required. You must be 14 years old or older or accompanied by an adult to access the research room.
What are the new hours for the library and museum?
On Wednesday, April 6, the full library and museum will open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every Wednesday through Saturday. The gift shop will also be open for visitors to check out.
By April 25, the venue will expand its hours to six days a week, Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
By May 8, the museum will remain open seven days a week, operating on Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Reopening after the pandemic restricted hours
It’s been a while since city visitors could fully experience the Truman museum and all its offerings. It originally closed for renovation in July 2019. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic delayed construction, leaving the museum closed for over a year, according to the museum’s spokesperson Dean Davison.
The library reopened briefly at the end of June 2021, but had to close again just a few weeks later due to high COVID-19 transmission rates.
The library and museum reopened in December 2021 but have still kept very restricted hours, in accordance with the National Archives and Records Administration’s COVID-19 regulations.
Now that the COVID-19 spread slowed down in Jackson County, the museum can finally welcome guests back into the newly renovated library and museum with its expanded hours.
“It is great to restore the Truman Library to full operations with our terrific new museum,” Truman Presidential Library and Museum director Kurt Graham said in a statement.
“With the pandemic receding, we are ready to embrace our guests and fully open our doors so they can experience this fabulous state-of-the-art exhibition about President Truman’s uniquely American story.”
